Funeral proceedings took an unexpected turn when a group of friends decided to honour their late peer, Tumaras, with an energetic celebration that some are calling revolutionary and others, disrespectful.

The video, shared on TikTok by @user10271622446597, shows friends dancing enthusiastically next to Tumaras' casket as the beat of the hit song Magumba fills the air. While some viewers cheered for this lively tribute, many were left in shock, stirring a heated debate on social media about the appropriateness of such a display at a funeral.

Church Leaders Left Stunned

As friends danced joyfully around the casket, church pastors and congregants looked on in disbelief. The poignant celebration of life continued until the DJ attempted to play another track, only to be abruptly stopped by a pastor. The creator of the video captioned his post expressing a wish for Tumaras to find eternal peace.

A Clash of Traditions and Perspectives

In a candid discussion with elder Ditsego Modupe, the team from Briefly News explored how this trend conflicts with traditional values in South African communities. Modupe shared his thoughts on the matter:

“It is a matter of respect for the departed. A funeral is a holy transition; it is a time for the family to grieve and for the community to pray. When people start dancing and playing loud music as if they are at a tavern, it strips away the dignity of the person being buried and leaves the church in a state of deep sorrow.”

When asked what advice he had for youths who prefer a more lively celebration at funerals, he advised:

“I would tell them that death is a serious matter. Life is a gift, and when it ends, we must show that we value what was lost. If you turn every funeral into a party, you lose the chance to reflect on your own life and spirit.”

The Twitterverse Reacts

The TikTok clip has since gone viral, amassing 728K views, 14.7K likes, and over 2.3K comments, showcasing the stark divide in opinions. While many praised the unique tribute, others expressed discontent, arguing there’s a time and place for celebration.

User @Kelebogile Mokgou celebrated Tumaras with a humorous remark:

"Tumaras was a happy soul 😂."

In contrast, user @masasa expressed outrage:

"This is a disgrace at all levels. I know there are some people who want to be buried a certain way...this is a disgrace."

The debates continue to rage online, leaving many wondering about the future of funeral etiquette in a rapidly changing world.
