In a striking address, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has drawn the spotlight on the increasingly fragile state of the KwaZulu-Natal Government of Provincial Unity. This commentary comes on the heels of the National Freedom Party’s exit from the coalition, plunging the province into political instability.
Mbalula took aim at the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, labeling it ill-prepared to steer the province amid its leadership woes. Accusations surfaced that MK’s revolving leadership door hampers its effectiveness, casting doubt on its recent electoral success during the 2024 general elections.
Mbalula's Stinging Critique of the MK Party
Mbalula’s remarks underscore the precariousness of the MK party's hold on leadership, stating,
"The MK Party was supposed to lead the province but was not ready."
He elaborated that constant leadership changes reflect deeper instability, pointing to ongoing infighting within the party.
What Led to the GPU's Demise?
The coalition's collapse was marked by a failed motion of no confidence against Premier Thami Ntuli, proposed by the MK and the Economic Freedom Fighters, who collectively hold a slight majority against the ANC and its allies. This setback led to urgent discussions among the ANC, IFP, and DA to explore new strategies moving forward.
Notably, MEC for Social Development Mbali Shinga faced pressure from her party to support the motion but resisted, complicating the coalition's already shaky foundation.
South African Reaction: A Social Media Backlash
Mbalula has also found himself on the receiving end of sharp critiques from South Africans. User Matinye Matlawa remarked,
"General Phahlane is looking for you."
Another user, Umzukulu ka Chibi uWarras, praised the NFP's decision to distance itself from the GPU, stating,
"I like what the NFP did to separate themselves from that GPU."
Meanwhile, Mtukulu WaBhantjie Ngomane commented,
"It seems like the ANC has long been prepared for this. They knew the people were fed up, and it was just a matter of time."
Viral Clash Among NFP Members
In a related incident, a viral video emerged showing NFP members embroiled in a physical confrontation, alleged to be between factions supporting Shinga and party president Ivan Barnes.
