When it comes to achieving academic success, one would expect that distinctions on a matric certificate would effortlessly lead to acceptance letters from esteemed universities. However, for one ambitious student, that was not the case.
This determined medical aspirant faced a challenging journey that turned her initial triumph into a tale of resilience. After celebrating five distinctions in her matric exams in 2019, she found herself grappling with disappointment as rejection emails from medical schools flooded her inbox.
Despite her stellar grades, low scores on the National Benchmark Test (NBT) became a significant barrier, leading to her dream of becoming a doctor feeling increasingly out of reach. Although the NBT cannot be failed, low performance can impede acceptance into competitive programs like Health Sciences.
In a heartfelt TikTok video shared on January 10, 2026, @medandmodesty, affectionately known as Gracey, opened up about her academic journey. Her inspiring story resonated with many, amassing over 14,000 likes on the platform.
Forced to take a gap year due to rejections, she took the time to reassess her strategy and reignite her hopes, which had flickered in the face of setbacks. By 2021, her perseverance paid off as she secured a spot at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. However, the challenges didn't end there; a setback in her second year, where she failed physiology, meant repeating the course and facing continued obstacles.
Golden Key Society: A Testament to Resilience
After repeating the course, Gracey succeeded and performed well enough to earn an invitation to join the prestigious Golden Key Society, a recognition for top academic achievers. This year marks a significant milestone in her journey as she embarks on her fifth year in medical school, with plans to graduate as a physician by December 2027.
