As South Africa celebrated the release of the 2025 matric results on January 13, 2026, one learner stood out above the rest, capturing the nation’s heart with her remarkable achievement. Meet Abigail Kok, the top achiever from York High School in the Western Cape, who not only excelled academically but inspired many with her dedication and discipline.

Abigail's outstanding results, part of a broader national pass rate of 88.2% — an impressive increase from last year's 86.6% — highlights the exceptional academic environment fostered in the Western Cape.

Following her incredible success, Abigail reflected on her journey during a public address. She credited the support from her parents, teachers, and work environment as crucial motivators throughout her challenging matric year.

In a heartfelt video shared on TikTok by user @nabeelahshaikh, Abigail expressed her gratitude, emphasizing the importance of personal motivation over seeking validation from others. She stated,

"My parents have always been extremely encouraging, and their big message to me has always been that you’re doing it for yourself, not for them."

Abigail's teachers played a pivotal role in shaping her outlook on education. They encouraged her to think beyond the content-heavy syllabus, fostering a love for critical thinking and deeper exploration of subjects. She articulated,

"They always encouraged me to look outside the script, because the syllabus is very content-based and there is so much more you can understand and discover."

However, her path wasn’t without challenges. Abigail spoke candidly about struggling with procrastination, particularly from distractions like social media. To combat this, she developed a strict study routine, maintained detailed notes, and prioritized regular revision. Her faith was also a cornerstone of her success, with nightly prayers helping her stay grounded during stressful times. She remarked,

"Each night I would pray and ask God to let me do my best and be good enough."

To future matriculants, Abigail offered valuable advice, urging them to work hard while also enjoying the experience. She treasured her matric year as a uniquely special time, describing it as

"an absolute blast"

and encouraged students to engage in as many activities as possible.
