In a dramatic turn of events, the National Freedom Party (NFP) has suspended Mbali Shinga for defying party orders, igniting a firestorm of reactions across South Africa.

Shinga, a prominent member of the KwaZulu-Natal government, now finds herself at the center of political turmoil following a press briefing in Durban. There, the NFP confirmed her suspension for a three-month period, pending a disciplinary inquiry into her conduct.

What Led to Shinga's Suspension?

During the briefing, it was revealed that Shinga's suspension came after her refusal to support party directives during a critical Motion of No Confidence vote aimed at Premier Thami Ntuli in December 2025. Instead of backing the motion, which ultimately failed, Shinga stood firm, leading to her party’s decision to withdraw from the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) shortly after.

Acting Secretary-General Sunset Bheki Xaba clarified that Shinga's continued presence as the MEC for Social Development became untenable, insisting that party members must adhere to leadership decisions or face consequences.

NFP's Withdrawal from GPU Explained

Xaba further explained the rationale for the NFP's exit from the GPU, expressing disappointment over unmet promises to the people of KwaZulu-Natal. He lamented that recent governance had strayed from democratic principles, stating:

"We refuse to be complicit in falsehoods or in the destruction of this province."

He highlighted that the coalition, which comprised one seat from the NFP amidst larger parties, would now see significant changes in power dynamics within the province.

Public Reaction: A Divided Nation

As news of Shinga's suspension spread, South Africans took to social media to voice their opinions, revealing a divided response to the NFP's controversial decision:

Opposing Views:

@Hoerang26 remarked:

“It’s a foolish step before the actual 2026 elections.”

Meanwhile, @KatlehojamesKj suggested:

“The IFP, DA and the ANC must recruit her, as she was the one who made them celebrate just under a month ago.”

Another user, @VMlambo, added:

“They can't afford to lose her.”

Support for NFP's Action:

On the flip side, some supported the party's stance. @Bongmusa__ questioned:

“Why is she not expelled?”

Agreeing with this sentiment, @Chief_Bavelelwe stated:

“Kanti, why not just expel this person?”

Finally, @Nathimlotshwa voiced a strong opinion, claiming:

“This Mbali Shinga has eaten ANC money and now has been caught in the middle. It is either ANC or NFP.”

Looking Ahead

This episode raises crucial questions about party discipline and electoral strategy as South Africa approaches pivotal elections. With the political landscape ever-shifting, all eyes will be on how the NFP navigates the fallout from this bold decision, and what ramifications it may have for both Shinga and the party moving forward.

Stay tuned for updates on this evolving story!
