Orlando Pirates Defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi Signs with Chicago Fire
Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has departed for the United States to finalize a deal with Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire, as reported by esteemed journalist Mark Gleeson.
Further details indicate that Chicago Fire is reportedly willing to offer a transfer fee of approximately US$3 million (around R52.14 million) to bring Mbokazi on board.
Since debuting in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in March under coach Jose Riveiro, Mbokazi has become a standout performer for Pirates, earning vice-captaincy and frequently leading the team when captain Nkosinathi Sibisi is unavailable.
Mbokazi’s exceptional form has also led to his role in the national team, where he has secured a starting position with Bafana Bafana. Coach Hugo Broos has praised his rapid progression, noting it as unparalleled in his experience.
He played a significant part in Bafana Bafana's qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although he missed the crucial match against Rwanda due to a suspension stemming from a red card against Zimbabwe.
Looking ahead, Mbokazi is expected to play an essential role in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, with Bafana Bafana's focus eventually shifting to the World Cup to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico in June 2026.
Should he perform well during his trial, Mbokazi could be representing Chicago Fire while also preparing to don the national colors for Bafana Bafana in the same country.
Chicago Fire is managed by former U.S. national team coach Gregg Berhalter, who led the team to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by the Netherlands.
