South African singer Naledi Aphiwe has clarified her supposed romantic relationship with fellow artist Mawelele, stating that it was never genuine.
The 19-year-old, who rose to fame after collaborating on a Chris Brown track, shared with Sowetan on January 15, 2026, that the rumored romance was merely a publicity tactic aimed at promoting their hit duet 'Romeo & Juliet.'
“It was all publicity for our music, and I thank everyone for believing in it. So, yes, I’m not, and never was, in a relationship with Mawelele. The only thing Mawelele would do was kiss me on the forehead, but that was it,” she explained.
This revelation comes after fans expressed confusion when the duo announced their breakup, especially following their win for Best African Pop Song at the 2025 Metro FM Awards.
Entertainment commentator Jabu McDonald previously shared the news of their award triumph on X, further fueling the narrative of their romantic involvement.
Aphiwe also disclosed that both she and Mawelele are now in separate relationships and felt it was necessary to be candid about their past.
“I think it’s time we both respect our partners by coming clean,” she stated.
The young artist has commenced 2026 on a promising note, securing a nomination for Best African Duo or Group in R&B alongside Mawelele at the 9th All Africa Music Awards (Afrima), thereby solidifying her burgeoning career in the music industry.
