KWAZULU-NATAL – A seismic shift in the political landscape of KwaZulu-Natal as the National Freedom Party (NFP) announces its immediate withdrawal from the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).
The NFP, previously in coalition with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), African National Congress (ANC), and Democratic Alliance (DA), has taken a decisive stand. With that move, the party's sole Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), Mbali Shinga, is now facing a demand for her resignation from the position of Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development.
NFP Withdraws from KZN GPU
In a letter issued to Shinga, Party Acting Secretary General, Sunset Bheki Xaba, confirmed the resolution to exit the GPU was made during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on January 5, 2026. The sentiment from the NEC is clear – Shinga's position as MEC is unsustainable under the current coalition dynamics.
“Accordingly, you are hereby instructed to tender your resignation from the position of MEC for Social Development in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government by 8 January 2026 at 9 am,”
the statement read.
