In a significant move to curb crime, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has cracked down on unlawful tavern operations, shuttering 21 establishments during the recent Operation Shanela. This operation comes in the wake of a troubling surge in violence linked to these venues, which have been implicated in numerous criminal activities.

The SAPS took decisive action over the weekend of 10 and 11 January 2026, as police officials noted a troubling trend where illegal taverns are contributing to increased crime rates. With over 15 lives tragically lost in mass shootings across the region in 2025, the crackdown was deemed essential.

SAPS Commissioner Applauds Efforts

Provincial Commissioner General Tommy Mthombeni commended officers for their relentless efforts. Alongside closing illegal taverns, the police apprehended 38 suspects involved in drug-related offenses, arrested 25 for driving under the influence, and detained 141 illegal immigrants. The initiative underscores SAPS' commitment to create safer communities.

The Dark Side of Taverns

The rise in tavern-related violence has raised alarm bells. In 2025, incidents such as the tragic shooting in Sundumbili, KwaZulu-Natal, where two off-duty officers lost their lives, and another horrendous incident in Bronkhortspruit, which resulted in five fatalities, further highlight the dangers posed by unregulated taverns.

Public Support for SAPS

The response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive. Social media users expressed their approval of SAPS’ decisive actions. Thomas Selumi commented:

"Alcohol is freely available to anyone, both licensed and unlicensed, to sell. I support the good work by SAPS."

Uzo Omuta added:

"I love this. This is a good start to the year. I hope these arrests will deter them from their shenanigans."

Many netizens echoed similar sentiments, reflecting a growing hope for improved safety in their communities as SAPS continues to fight back against crime.

Tragic Tavern Incidents

The recent history of tavern shootings in South Africa reveals a pressing need for action. In one shocking incident at the KwaNoxolo Tavern, armed assailants stormed the venue, claiming multiple lives and raising the stakes for community safety.
