Rising Maskandi sensation Siya Ntuli has teamed up with the genre’s heavyweight, Big Zulu, to release a heartfelt and authentic love ode titled “Amaphiko.” The single, which translates to “The Wings,” is a beautiful exploration of love’s uplifting and transformative power, set against the rich, rhythmic tapestry of contemporary Maskandi music.
“Amaphiko” is a masterful blend of Siya Ntuli’s fresh, melodic storytelling and Big Zulu’s iconic, grounded vocal prowess. The song uses the metaphor of wings to describe how true love can elevate the spirit, offering refuge, strength, and a soaring freedom. The intricate guitar work and harmonious vocals create a sound that is both traditionally rooted and instantly captivating for a modern audience.
For Siya Ntuli, this collaboration is a dream realized and a testament to the inspirational journey of music. “This song is about the love that lifts you higher, that gives you the courage to face anything. To have Inkabi himself, Big Zulu, on this track is an honour. He heard the truth in the story we wanted to tell – a story that lives in the hearts of our people, expressed through our music,” says Ntuli.
Big Zulu, known for his deep, philosophical lyrics, was drawn to the song’s pure and powerful sentiment. “When Siya played ‘Amaphiko’ for me, I heard a genuine story, not just words. It reminded me that before anything else, Maskandi is about izindaba zempilo – the stories of life. Love is the greatest of these stories. It’s the wing that carries us. I was inspired to add my voice to this beautiful narrative,” shares Big Zulu.
“Amaphiko” is more than just a love song; it’s a celebration of cultural expression and a bridge between generations of Maskandi artistry. It promises to be a staple at celebrations, on radio playlists, and in the hearts of listeners who appreciate music that speaks directly to the soul.
