In a recent interview on The Penuel Show, South African podcaster and academic Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh stirred up a storm by revealing that his mother, Theresa Oakley-Smith, is actually 14 years older than his father, Advocate Dali Mpofu. This shocking tidbit, aired on 6 January 2025 but resurfaced on social media on 7 January 2026, has ignited a flurry of mixed reactions across platforms.
Unveiling the Age Gap
Sizwe's revelation about his parents has certainly put his family dynamic front and center. He detailed how his mother was not just a lecturer at Wits University but also the warden of the residence where his father lived as a student. Their love story wasn’t without controversy, as Sizwe explained:
“She was then the warden of a residence called Barnato Hall at Wits, which is still there today, and that residence was a crucible for anti-apartheid struggle, especially student activism in the 80s. That's where she met my dad, by the way, who is a student at that residence. It was the biggest scandal you can imagine, right?”
Elaborating on the nature of their relationship, he added:
“It was a huge scandal, and people disowned her, and the university was in uproar.”
This snippet served as a jumping-off point for social media debates, with users flooding the comment sections to express their thoughts on the age difference.
SA's Social Media Meltdown
The reactions from the public have been nothing short of intense. While some users criticized Sizwe's mother for the age gap, others came to her defense arguing that they were both consenting adults at the time. Notable comments included:
@TheJustCaused said: “People should be allowed to have their own preferences. Most of us who bash that family will never have even half a life as impactful as Dali or his son. If we used our focus to pull our lives up, we would improve.”
@mmlets joked: “He has always liked them old😂”
@GodGuluvaGuruu shared: “I see nothing wrong here.”
@BLK0609 remarked: “Just like Macron and his wife🤣🤣”
Beyond Age: Personal Revelations
In the same interview, Mpofu-Walsh opened up about another significant aspect of his life—his strained relationship with his childhood friend, the late rapper AKA. The two, who attended high school together and once formed a hip-hop group, Entity, have faced their share of challenges over the years, further reminding fans of the complexities in personal relationships.
