Sophie Turner Shares Insights on Upcoming Tomb Raider TV Show and Her Training Regimen

Sophie Turner is set to take on the iconic role of Lara Croft in the highly anticipated Tomb Raider TV series on Prime Video. The renowned actress, known for her portrayal of Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, recently opened up about her preparations for the show.

During an appearance on SiriusXM, Turner revealed that she has never met Angelina Jolie, the actress who previously played Croft in the early 2000s films. "No. Never. I would love to meet her," she expressed.

In her preparation for the series, Turner has been immersing herself in the world of Tomb Raider by playing the video games and reading the comics. However, she mentioned her decision to steer clear of Jolie's films, stating, "I don't want to imitate. I've got to create my own thing. So as much as I love those movies, I can't watch them right now."

Turner also provided insight into her intense physical training for the role, which consists of an impressive eight hours a day, five days a week, since February 2025. "So it's been a lot," she admitted.

While she didn't elaborate on her specific workout routine, Turner noted a challenging development: a "perpetual back problem" that she encountered during her training. She acknowledged that having a background in fitness would have made it easier for her to build muscle, saying, "I didn't, so it's taken me months and months and months to get into good shape."

Reflecting on her previous role in Game of Thrones, she remarked on how she often found herself on the receiving end of violence, stating she was "not the one doing the beating." In contrast, she noted that her portrayal of Lara Croft will allow her to take charge, expressing, "It's quite nice to learn how to throw a punch and not just take it."

The filming for the Tomb Raider TV series is set to commence this month, though no release date has been announced yet. The series promises to explore the adventures of a woman who raids tombs, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge serving as the creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner along with Chad Hodge.

Joining Turner in the cast are notable actors including Jason Isaacs as Lara's uncle Atlas, Sigourney Weaver as Evelyn Wallis, and Bill Baterson as Winston. For more character insights, fans can look forward to details about the ensemble in the upcoming series.

In related Tomb Raider news, the 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander is seeing a resurgence in popularity on Netflix. Meanwhile, the gaming series is set to expand with two new titles announced at The Game Awards in December 2025: a remake called Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which will arrive in 2026, and a new installment named Tomb Raider: Catalyst, set for release in 2027, featuring Alix Wilton Regan as the new Lara Croft.
