Exciting changes are underway for South African drivers as the government unveils plans to introduce a revamped driving licence card! This marks a significant step towards the future with the promise of digital licences on the horizon.

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced that while a new physical driving licence card will be rolled out in the short term, fully digital licences linked to ID documents are on the way. This transformation comes after a series of delays, primarily due to the long-standing problems with the outdated licence printer.

“As we modernize our systems, integrating driving licences with ID numbers makes perfect sense,” Creecy stated.

Currently, South Africa has been reliant on a solitary printer, which has been in operation since 1998 and has faced numerous breakdowns. Just last February, production was stalled for months due to issues with this machine, resulting in a staggering backlog of nearly 750,000 licence cards. Though this backlog is now cleared, efforts to find a better solution have been crucial.

A Fresh Look for Licence Cards

In a bid to combat these challenges, the Department of Transport has signed a new agreement with Government Printing Works (GPW) to take over the production of driving licence cards. This changeover is expected to be completed and operational by late 2025, though delays have pushed this timeline further. Creecy assures that continuous integration between the involved IT systems is underway, with Cabinet approval for the new cards expected soon.

The Future is Digital, But with Caution

While an interim solution is put into action, testing for a digital driving licence that can be stored on smartphones is also occurring. This digital option aligns with the government’s aim to establish a singular digital ID system for all citizens. Yet, Creecy emphasizes the need for caution in rolling out these changes, especially as many South Africans, particularly the older population, prefer the traditional physical card.

“You can’t move straight into digital documents,” Creecy remarked.

As the nation gears up for its new driving licence system, residents can expect the introduction of this physical card soon, with digital options coming along gradually.

Clearing Up Misconceptions for Older Drivers

In related news, there have been rumors that older drivers would face new, harsher licence requirements. The Department of Transport has firmly dismissed these claims, asserting that drivers over the age of 70 will not be subjected to any new or stricter rules when applying for their licences. Spokesperson Collen Msibi clarified,

“There simply isn’t any new regulation.”

Combatting the Licence Backlog

Meanwhile, the Department of Transport is optimistic about completely clearing the driver’s licence backlog by December 2025. With the previous printer fully operational since May 2025, the department has already processed over 834,000 licence cards, while around 539,000 applications are still pending.

This crucial overhaul promises not just a fresh look for driving permits in South Africa but also a more integrated, digital future for all drivers. Stay tuned as we watch these transformations unfold!
