In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the family of Rikus Kylander, an 18-year-old from Krugersdorp, Gauteng, has announced the end of their 22-day search for him. Rikus disappeared in Mozambique during a snorkelling excursion on December 18, 2025, while celebrating his recent matriculation with friends.

The family traveled to Mozambique, tirelessly searching day and night, but despite their hopes, they were unable to locate him.

Family's Heartfelt Farewell to Hope

After nearly three weeks of desperate efforts, Rikus’s sister, Clarise, confirmed the heartbreaking decision to cease the search.

“Everything that could be done has been done,”

she expressed, acknowledging the exhausting journey they had undertaken.

Clarise also extended her gratitude to the community, noting the immense support they received throughout this trying time:

“We are deeply grateful to every single person who has walked alongside us during this unimaginable time — your prayers, efforts, messages, and acts of kindness have meant more than words can ever express,”

she stated. Despite halting their official search, the family has requested that volunteers and the local community remain vigilant in case Rikus is found.

Community Unites in Grief

South Africans across social media have voiced their condolences and shared empathetic messages for the Kylander family following their heartbreaking announcement. Cheryl Bosch noted:

“I understand how you feel; we are not supposed to lose our children. Remember them always and say their name, they existed, they lived, they loved.”

Others shared their sentiments as well, with Margaret Hewitt stating:

“Miracles do happen, but this is a very brave action. Praying for you as a family.”

Sibusiso Khumalo emphasized the painful reality of their decision:

“It must have been extremely difficult for the family to make this decision. Strength to the family.”

The outpouring of support continues, as locals and family friends hold Rikus in their thoughts, offering strength and love during this dark time.

A Father's Plea for Closure

In an emotional plea, Rikus’s father urged authorities to find his son's body, hoping to grant him the dignified burial he deserves. This family's story serves as a reminder of the profound impact of loss and the importance of community support in times of tragedy.
