The heart-wrenching story of the Cele family in KwaDweshula, KwaZulu-Natal, has captured the attention of many following a tragic incident on New Year’s Day. The family, mourning the loss of four cherished members, received a visit from KZN Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga, who offered her condolences and support during this devastating time.

On January 1, 2026, a suspected home invasion turned horrific as a mother and her three children were shot dead by assailants demanding money. This violent act is a stark reminder of the troubling rise in violent incidents in South Africa, which includes other recent shootings in Bekkersdal and Atteridgeville.

MEC Shinga: 'We Will Stand By You'

During her visit on January 5, MEC Shinga reassured the Cele family that authorities are committed to ensuring justice is served. She emphasized that they would receive continued support from the government.

“It is not easy for the family at this time, but we have offered support, and we will continue to stand by them,” Shinga stated.

She stressed the importance of faith in the justice system, indicating that a thorough investigation is underway.

“At this difficult moment, they must have trust in our justice system. The relevant departments are working on the matter, and eventually, the family will find closure,” she remarked.

Family Member Shares Their Pain

Before the MEC arrived, a family representative shared their struggles, expressing frustration with the ongoing police investigation.

"There is nothing we can do. The police continue with their investigations, but we have not received any progress reports," the family member lamented.

He also highlighted the logistical challenges they face in preparing for the funeral.

"We requested a TLB [tractor-loader-backhoe] because it will be hard, as we are burying four people. We also requested the road to be fixed so that people can be transported more easily on the day of the funeral," he added.

Additionally, he mentioned the psychological support extended to the children who witnessed the tragic events.

Details of the Incident

The grim events unfolded as the Cele family attempted to celebrate the New Year. The shooting, reported by SABC News, marked a sorrowful start to 2026. In light of the incident, the South African Police Service has initiated an investigation to uncover the details surrounding the home invasion.

The local community has been left in shock and mourning, with many expressing their sympathies online. One concerned social media user poignantly remarked that KwaZulu-Natal “needs prayers” in the wake of this tragic occurrence.

In a troubling context, the violence continues, with another mass shooting at KwaNoxolo Tavern in Bekkersdal leading to nine deaths and ten injuries just weeks before the Cele family's loss. The violent crime wave has prompted police units to intensify efforts in tracking down the perpetrators.

As the Cele family navigates this painful chapter, the nation watches and hopes for justice and healing in the face of such devastating loss.
