Former Kaizer Chiefs mentor Muhsin Ertugral has praised Abdeslam Ouaddou’s remarkable achievements this season as the Orlando Pirates head coach gears up for the challenges of the Premier Soccer League's second round.
Since joining the Sea Robbers in the summer after his stint with Marumo Gallants, Ouaddou has led the team to impressive victories, clinching titles in both the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup competitions.
Under Ouaddou's leadership, Orlando Pirates boasts an impressive record with 20 wins, three losses, and two draws from 24 matches across all tournaments this season.
Having previously played as a central defender, Ouaddou has fortified the Buccaneers’ defense—evidenced by an incredible run where they secured eight consecutive victories without conceding a single goal.
Ertugral Sends Good Vibes to Ouaddou
Ertugral emphasized that Ouaddou’s elite-level experience and mental toughness have been vital to the Pirates’ setup this season.
Speaking on the OmniAudioAfrica podcast, he remarked,
“Orlando Pirates made an outstanding appointment ahead of the campaign. From the get-go, it was clear they had secured a coach with an exceptional résumé and remarkable mental strength.”
Ertugral expressed hope that Ouaddou would be afforded the freedom to implement his strategies effectively, while acknowledging that the second half of the season would pose its own set of challenges, particularly with Mamelodi Sundowns looming as strong opponents.
Pirates’ Stellar Stats Under Ouaddou
The statistics this season reflect Ouaddou's impressive leadership—Orlando Pirates have scored 48 goals while only conceding 17 across competitions.
From a tactical perspective, Ouaddou has focused on precision in both penalty areas and emphasized transition play, game management, and timely substitutions that often turn the tide of matches.
These strategies shine through in the standings, with Orlando Pirates currently at the top of the Betway Premiership table, holding a two-point lead along with a match in hand over the reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, who are on the hunt for their ninth consecutive league title.
