Amajita Faces Defeat in World Cup Opener Against France

Amajita’s FIFA World Cup U20 journey got off to a disappointing start as they suffered a 2-1 loss to France on Monday evening at Estadio El Teniente.

Despite starting the game brightly and creating numerous chances in the first 20 minutes, Amajita failed to capitalize on their opportunities.

The French side took the lead in the 24th minute through Anthony Bermont, who scored after Tylon Smith’s defensive mistake.

However, Amajita equalized just eight minutes later when Jody Ah Shene scored from the spot after Kutlwano Lethlaku was fouled by Elyaz Zidane, the son of legendary Zinedine Zidane, in the box.

The penalty was awarded after a VAR intervention, as the referee had initially let the play continue.

At halftime, Amajita were threatening to take the lead, with Lazola Maku’s impressive shot from outside the box denied by French goalkeeper Lisandru Olmeta’s excellent save.

However, the South Africans struggled to create clear chances in the early stages of the second half.

Coach Raymond Mdaka introduced Luke Baartman, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Siviwe Magidigidi in an attempt to strengthen the attack and find the winning goal.

Despite Shakeel April’s missed opportunity in the 75th minute, Amajita continued to push for the equalizer.

Unfortunately, it was France who scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute through Lucas Michal, who beat Amajita’s goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe with a well-placed shot.

Amajita’s inability to convert their chances into goals ultimately cost them the match.

The African champions now sit at the bottom of Group E and will look to bounce back against New Caledonia on Friday morning at Estadio El Teniente.

Meanwhile, France will face the United States on Thursday evening. The Group E fixtures will continue on Tuesday morning with the United States taking on New Caledonia at 01:00.
