Amajita Ready to Battle Colombia in U-20 World Cup Knockout Stage

Amajita will face Colombia in the Round of 16 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, with the match expected to take place on Wednesday.

Raymond Mdaka’s side secured second place in Group E after a stunning 2-1 victory over the United States on Sunday night.

Colombia finished top of Group F with five points following their 1-1 draw against Nigeria on Monday morning.

According to FIFA’s knockout sequence, the winner of Group F meets the runner-up of Group E — setting up Amajita’s clash with the South American side.

Amajita’s win over the USA began when Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thato Sibiya delivered a teasing cross that forced Joshua Wynder to score an own goal in the 17th minute, cancelling out Noah Cobb’s 12th-minute opener for the Americans.

Despite being under heavy pressure from a dominant USA team that had earlier beaten France and New Caledonia, Amajita remained dangerous on the counterattack. Their resilience paid off in stoppage time of the first half when Gomolemo Kekana finished off a lightning-fast break, calmly side-footing Shakeel April’s pinpoint cross into the far corner.

Amajita had to withstand intense late pressure but held firm to claim second spot in Group E with six points. They had earlier lost 2-1 to France before thrashing New Caledonia 5-0.

This historic victory marks only the second time Amajita have reached the Round of 16 at the U-20 World Cup, following their memorable run in Egypt in 2009.
