Coach Raymond Mdaka Unveils 21-Man Amajita Squad for FIFA Under-20 World Cup
Coach Mdaka has announced a formidable 21-man squad for Amajita as they prepare to compete in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile later this month. This squad maintains a robust core of players who made history by clinching South Africa's first-ever AFCON junior title in Morocco earlier this year.
Key Players and Squad Breakdown
The squad is a blend of experienced youth internationals alongside emerging talents from prominent clubs. Highlighted within the roster are players who shone during the AFCON victory:
- Goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe: A pivotal figure in the team’s triumph, he was honored as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament. Currently with Estoril Praia in Portugal, his international experience will be invaluable.
- Defender Tylon Smith: Recognized as the Player of the Tournament, Smith's superb performance has secured him a transfer to QPR in England, illustrating the squad's quality.
The team includes a strong representation from the PSL's top clubs, with notable players from Kaizer Chiefs such as Sifiso Timba, Luke Baartman, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Takalani Mazhimba. Additionally, Mamelodi Sundowns will contribute Asekho Tiwani, who has recovered from a prior injury during the AFCON, along with Siyabonga Mabena, Gomolemo Kekana, and Kutlwano Letlhaku.
South Africa’s World Cup Challenge
Amajita will represent one of four African nations at the tournament, joining Nigeria, Morocco, and Egypt—all of which reached the AFCON junior semifinals.
