Amajita coach Raymond Mdaka expresses confidence against Colombia in U20 clash
The match is set for Wednesday evening at Estadio Fiscal, kicking off at 21:30, where the African champions aim to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in history.
“We’ve been watching Colombia since we knew we were playing them,” Mdaka remarked.
“They are a smart team, very disciplined in terms of their system, in terms of their formation, but like any other game, there are areas where we think as a team we can explore, areas that we can go into in terms of the spaces that they leave. But they are a good team.”
Amajita concluded Group E in second place, amassing six points from victories against New Caledonia and the United States, alongside a loss to France.
Conversely, Colombia triumphed in Group F with five points, thanks to a win against Saudi Arabia and draws against Norway and Nigeria.
Mdaka acknowledged Colombia’s strong defensive performance but believes there are exploitable areas. “They don’t concede much based on their record, and while they leave some spaces defensively, they are well organized,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Mdaka remains confident in his team's adaptability. “The style of play will be a little different, but one thing we’re focusing on is how quickly we can adapt to different playing styles from various teams,” he added.
Preparation for the match has been intensive, as Mdaka assures his team is ready to execute their strategy against Colombia. “This is a team we’ve analyzed, and we are still refining our approach overnight,” he concluded.
A victory against Colombia would mark a historic milestone for Amajita, achieving their first quarterfinal appearance in the competition, especially significant given their previous singular win in the tournament, which occurred against Honduras in 2009.
Having reached the last 16 for the second time—after their remarkable run in Egypt in 2009—the African champions are eager to extend their legacy further.
