AmaZulu's President Envisions Long-Term Commitment to Coach Arthur Zwane

AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu believes in the long-term potential of head coach Arthur Zwane, comparing him to legendary managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger.

Zungu acknowledged that while he would prefer to keep Zwane for an extended period, the coach's own willingness to remain in Durban is crucial for this vision to materialize.

Both Wenger and Ferguson enjoyed illustrious tenures at their respective clubs, with Wenger leading Arsenal to three Premier League titles and Ferguson claiming a record 13 league championships with Manchester United.

Arthur Zwane was appointed as head coach on 8 October of the previous year, following the dismissal of Pablo Franco Martin due to a poor start to the season. After Vusi Vilakazi's resignation in February for personal reasons, Zwane assumed full responsibilities.

When Zwane and Vilakazi were brought in, AmaZulu was struggling near the bottom of the Betway Premiership standings. However, Zwane’s guidance led the team to an impressive sixth-place finish last season, their first top-eight finish in two years.

Currently, AmaZulu is positioned seventh in the league with 15 points from nine matches, indicating growth but also room for improvement.

At the unveiling event of the club's new logo and mascot (Hebe) at Princess Magogo Stadium, Zungu underlined the importance of consistency in leadership.

“My intention is to avoid changing coaches,” Zungu stated. “I would like to replicate the stability seen under Arsène Wenger at Arsenal.”

“Similarly, if I could mirror Manchester United's stability under Sir Alex Ferguson, I would pursue that as well. However, it requires the coach’s commitment to be part of the project.”

Zungu commended Zwane for understanding and embodying AmaZulu’s identity. “In Arthur, Phakimpi, I see someone who values our history and respects our badge,” he remarked. “His dedication to the AmaZulu ethos and his coaching capabilities are invaluable assets.”

“In the past, we felt compelled to change coaches, but now our goal is continuity.”

AmaZulu's next challenge is against Chippa United in a Betway Premiership match at Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday at 20:15.
