Oswin Appollis was the hero for Orlando Pirates on Tuesday, scoring a late goal to secure a 1-0 victory against a struggling Siwelele FC in a Betway Premiership match at Toyota Stadium.
The match, which appeared headed for a goalless draw, came to life with just 10 minutes left. Appollis, who has been in stellar form, found the ball at his feet inside the box and slotted it past Siwelele goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.
The win propelled the Buccaneers to fourth place on the Betway Premiership table with 12 points from six matches.
Siwelele’s Struggles Continue
For Siwelele, the loss was another blow to their season. The team, which made headlines earlier in the week, now sits in 15th place with only four points after eight matches. They are currently level on points with bottom-placed Chippa United, Orbit College, and Stellenbosch FC.
The Buccaneers dominated the match, creating numerous scoring opportunities but struggling to capitalize on them until Appollis broke the deadlock in the 80th minute.
Evidence Makgopa expertly set up Appollis’ well-taken goal, and it proved to be the deciding factor in the match.
Siwelele, who has been reeling under significant changes off the pitch, put up a valiant effort but ultimately couldn’t withstand the Pirates’ relentless pressure.
The home side had announced significant changes to their management structure over the weekend, parting ways with CEO Stan Matthews and assistant coach Andre Arendse, who Willem Jackson subsequently replaced.
Despite these changes, Siwelele’s on-field performance showed glimpses of promise but ultimately fell short.
The match began at a frenetic pace, with both teams creating scoring chances. Relebohile Mofokeng had a clear opportunity for the Pirates but failed to execute it effectively.
The first half ended goalless, with both teams evenly matched in terms of possession and shots on goal.
Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made strategic substitutions, introducing Cemran Dansin and Appollis in place of Patrick Maswanganyi and Thalente Mbatha at the start of the second half, in a bid to bolster the midfield and break the deadlock.
The introduction of Dansin and Appollis had an immediate impact, with the duo creating several scoring opportunities.
However, it was Appollis who ultimately scored the decisive goal, converting a well-placed shot following a free kick that was awarded after Siwelele fouled Tshepang Moremi.
Siwelele nearly equalized three minutes later through Christian Saile’s header, but Sipho Chaine pulled off an impressive save to deny them at the back post.
As this victory sends Pirates to fourth place, the Buccaneers now shift their focus to the CAF Champions League, where they will face Lesotho giants Lioli at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Siwelele’s next challenge will be against Marumo Gallants at Dr. Molemela Stadium on Sunday. It is a game where coach Lehlohonolo Seema promised that they will turn the corner.
