Orlando Pirates Attacker Oswin Appollis Predicted Trophy Triumph
Orlando Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis expressed confidence in winning a trophy the moment he signed with the club. His foresight became a reality as Pirates secured a resounding 3-0 victory over Stellenbosch in the MTN8 final held at Mbombela Stadium.
Coming off the bench, Appollis made an immediate impact, delivering a precise cross into the six-yard box for Tshepang Moremi to net the opening goal. After Moremi assisted Tshegofatso Mabasa for the second goal, Appollis played a crucial role in the third, which concluded the match decisively against Steve Barker’s side.
He regained possession by intercepting a misplaced pass from defender Henri Stanic, then threaded the ball to Moremi, who finished with ease, sealing the victory.
A Goal Scorer's Perspective
The Bafana Bafana international, who previously attracted interest from several clubs, took a decisive step by signing with Pirates from Polokwane City in June. Appollis stated, “The day I signed [for Pirates] I always knew that I was going to win a trophy. And it happened, and I’m very happy.”
This mindset aligns with coach Abdelsam Ouaddou’s philosophy, who refers to players on the bench as “impact players.” Appollis, Moremi, and Mabasa’s substitutions exemplified this strategy, changing the dynamics of a game that Pirates struggled to penetrate initially.
“Those who are sitting on the bench, we always think about what we are going to do when we come in,” Appollis noted, celebrating his first-ever trophy victory. “We don’t call ourselves substitutions; we call ourselves impact players, and that is what we did. Credit has to go to the whole team.”
This victory extends the MTN8 trophy record for Pirates, marking their fourth consecutive win. They now trail Kaizer Chiefs by just one title for the all-time record of 15 top-eight trophies, a benchmark that Chiefs haven't increased since 2014.
