Aston Villa currently shares identical points with Manchester City, being third and second in the Premier League, respectively. However, their January transfer strategies differ significantly.
While Villa has recruited two young attackers at considerable costs, Manchester City has signed the captain of a rival Premier League team.
The West Midlands club faces challenges in midfield with only one striker available. These pressing issues are expected to be addressed this month. Financial expert Stefan Borson has emphasized the gravity of Villa’s predicament.
Could Villa be banned from Europe?
Speaking to talkSPORT personalities Jim White, Simon Jordan, and Alex Crook, Borson delved into Aston Villa’s financial status. Manager Unai Emery has already highlighted their shortcomings post-match following a loss to Everton, acknowledging their inability to contend with the top five teams.
“For Villa it’s not an excuse, it is the reality,” said Borson. “First of all, they are already under a settlement agreement with UEFA, so they are severely limited in what they can do under that settlement agreement. They could breach it, but they risk being banned from Europe which would be obviously counterproductive.”
Borson continued by discussing the burden of the current sporting financial regulations (PSR), suggesting that it is precariously tight for Villa. He believes they narrowly meet the PSR requirements because of the recent sale of their women's team.
“The reality is losing against Everton is absolutely related to PSR because the squad's not large enough to handle the players' workload,” he stated. “They’ve also suffered injuries. Consequently, the squad is overworked and that creates issues, with little they can currently change.”
Villa will face a looming test in their next match against Fenerbahce in the Europa League, where manager Emery will lack key players including Emiliano Martinez and John McGinn, further straining their limited squad depth.
