Bad Bunny Faces $16 Million Lawsuit Over Alleged Vocal Sample Theft!

A year ago, Bad Bunny released what many consider his best album, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS. However, on the album's one-year anniversary, he found himself entangled in legal woes when Tainaly Y. Serrano Rivera slapped him with a staggering $16 million lawsuit. The claim? Allegedly using her vocals on two of his tracks without her consent.

According to court documents from Puerto Rico and reports from Rolling Stone, the lawsuit also names Bunny's Rimas Entertainment label and prominent producer Roberto "La Paciencia" Rosado as co-defendants. The controversy revolves around Serrano Rivera's voice appearing in Bunny's hits: at the end of "Solo De Mi" from the 2018 album X 100PRE and in the middle of "EoO" from the recent DtMF project. Her catchy line, "Mira, puñeta, no me quiten el perreo" translates to a passionate plea—"Look, damn it, don't take away the perreo!"

While studying at Arecibo's Inter American University, Serrano Rivera claims producer La Paciencia asked her to record the phrase without disclosing its commercial use. She insists that no formal agreement was made allowing her voice to be used on those tracks.

Serrano Rivera highlights Bad Bunny's massive success and branding around her phrase through merchandise and social media interactions, arguing that her publicity and privacy rights were violated. Now, she seeks $16 million in damages from all parties involved, and the music industry is buzzing with anticipation regarding their response.

Why Did Bad Bunny's Ex-Girlfriend Sue Him?

Bad Bunny performs on stage for his “Most Wanted Tour” at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., Saturday, May 11, 2024.

This isn't the first legal battle for Bad Bunny. Interestingly, the lawyers representing Serrano Rivera also previously acted on behalf of his ex-girlfriend Carliz De La Cruz Hernández, who accused him in 2023 of using a vocal sample of her saying "Bad Bunny, baby" in two of his tracks without permission.

That prior lawsuit—centered around the songs "Pa' Ti" and "Dos Mil 16" from Un Verano Sin Ti—remains unresolved within Puerto Rico's court system, leaving fans eager for clarity on where these legal storms will lead.
