Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams pays tribute to coach Hugo Broos after victory.
The win secured South Africa’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This marks South Africa’s first World Cup qualification since 2002, despite participating as the host nation in 2010.
Even after a minor setback with FIFA deducting three points for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, Bafana Bafana finished top of Group C with 18 points, becoming the ninth African nation to qualify for the upcoming global event.
Under Broos' leadership, South African football has greatly improved, with Bafana Bafana clinching bronze at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast and now qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 23 years.
Williams expressed his admiration for the Belgian tactician and his technical team following this historic accomplishment.
“It’s amazing — I’m lost for words. I don’t know what to say. This is what dreams are made of,” said Williams.
“Just to see the support, to see Bafana Bafana uniting the country — it’s incredible. Kudos to the players, to the technical team, to coach Hugo. It’s amazing what you’ve done for South African football.”
“See you guys in the USA.”
