Bafana Bafana's Missed Chances Lead to Frustrating Draw Against Zimbabwe

Bafana Bafana endured a night of frustration against Zimbabwe

Bafana Bafana faced a frustrating evening as they struck the woodwork twice and settled for a goalless draw against Zimbabwe in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match held at the packed Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

The disappointing draw was further compounded as Benin secured a 1-0 victory over Rwanda, placing them at the top of Group C with 17 points, while Bafana sits at 15 points.

This result leaves Hugo Broos’ side in a challenging situation. Bafana required a win to maintain control over their qualification prospects ahead of their upcoming group clash against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday. Now, they find themselves dependent on Nigeria to assist them by defeating Benin on the same day.

The situation worsened as defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi was sent off in the final minute, epitomizing the overall frustration of the home side.

Coach Hugo Broos exhibited visible frustration following the match, acutely aware that Bafana's chances of qualification have now largely slipped out of their control.

The match opened positively for South Africa, with Oswin Appollis sending a dangerous cross through the 18-yard box within the first 45 seconds. Bafana dominated the early possession, while Zimbabwe's initial meaningful attempt came in the sixth minute. By the eighth minute, Broos' squad generated their first significant set-piece opportunity as they maintained pressure.

Sipho Mbule soon came close, narrowly missing the target inside the box after a setup by the energetic Appollis. South Africa continued to control the play, persistently challenging Zimbabwe's defense but unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Mohau Nkota nearly struck midway through the first half with a curling effort that skimmed Washington Arubi’s crossbar.

The second half mirrored the first, with Lyle Foster denied a goal by an impressive defensive clearance after he rounded goalkeeper Arubi. Zimbabwe's situation worsened when Knowledge Musona received a second yellow card in the 63rd minute, leaving the visitors with ten men.

Broos introduced Tshepang Moremi, a rising star from Orlando Pirates, making his debut for Bafana in the 78th minute as the hosts pushed for a crucial breakthrough. Foster came the closest to scoring again in the 81st minute, with his low shot hitting the crossbar as Arubi remained stationary.

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Bafana Bafana was unable to secure the necessary goal, jeopardizing their World Cup qualification hopes.
