Stellenbosch Coach Steve Barker Delighted with Winning Start and Moloisane's Milestone
Stellenbosch FC ended their three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory against AS Otoho at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, marking a significant start to their CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage campaign. Coach Steve Barker expressed pride in the performance of the team, particularly singling out Thabo Moloisane.
Barker emphasized, “Defending lays the foundation to win games and attack opposition. If you are not defending well and conceding, it makes it more difficult.” He acknowledged the areas where the team needed to improve, particularly in ball possession and player confidence.
The win was clinched in dramatic fashion with Ashley Cupido scoring the decisive goal in the 93rd minute, benefiting from a well-timed through ball from Thato Khiba.
This match also marked a career milestone for Thabo Moloisane, who reached 100 appearances for Stellenbosch after transferring from Maritzburg United in 2023.
“I am very proud of Thabo,” Barker stated, highlighting Moloisane's journey and resilience after a tough season at Maritzburg that resulted in relegation. Moloisane has been a key player, starting in all of his appearances for Stellenbosch, distinguishing him among the club's 100-game players.
Moloisane's strong performance has not gone unnoticed, as he has also been called up to Hugo Broos' 54-man preliminary squad for the upcoming AFCON tournament in Morocco this December.
