Stellenbosch Coach Steve Barker Optimistic Following First Away Win
Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker is expressing hope that their recent victory over Orbit College signifies the start of an upward trajectory after clinching their first away win of the season in the league.
The team exhibited impressive determination, overcoming an early setback with a player down to secure a remarkable 2-1 win at Olympia Park Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Goals in the dying minutes from Thato Khiba and Athenkosi Mcaba, scored at the 89th and 92nd minutes, respectively, propelled Stellenbosch to victory in the Betway Premiership, despite being down to 10 men following Thabo Moloisane’s red card.
This victory has elevated Stellies to 14th position on the Betway Premiership table, amassing 12 points from 13 matches, while Magesi has fallen one place below them.
“Securing this win was crucial for our league standing, and it feels great to finally achieve our first away victory this season,” stated Barker.
He further noted, “Historically, we have fared well in away matches, though this season has posed challenges. I hope this win will be the beginning of many more on the road.”
“The manner of our victory—being 1-0 down and a player down—was especially remarkable. The equalizer by Thato Khiba was incredible, and Athenkosi Mcaba scoring the winning goal on his debut was exceptionally special.”
The team’s inconsistent performance this season can be attributed to the loss of key players during the offseason, notably Fawaaz Basadien, last season’s Player of the Season, who transferred to Mamelodi Sundowns.
“Once again, our players demonstrated a never-give-up attitude and resilience. They diligently continued fighting, and I was confident that we could score again after the first goal,” added Barker.
“This win hopefully reinforces our belief that we can fight back in games, and serves as a reminder that hard work can yield rewards. Our aim is to use these victories as a foundation for growth and consistency.”
Looking ahead, Barker's squad faces a challenging schedule, having traveled from Polokwane to the North West for the match against Orbit College.
Next, they will take to the road once more to confront the Singida Black Stars of Tanzania in their second Group C match of the CAF Confederation Cup at Liti Stadium on Sunday.
