Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker remains optimistic about his team’s chances of reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stages after a goalless draw against 15 de Agosto de Akonibe in Equatorial Guinea.
The first leg of the second preliminary round was played at Estadio de Ebibeyin, where Stellenbosch battled through tough conditions.
“It was not an easy encounter. There were a lot of difficulties within the game; the weather conditions, the pitch, but I think we applied well for the majority of the game,” said Barker.
“We were the better team, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to convert one or two of the chances that we created. But the players have done well to come out of these conditions, having not conceded,” added Barker.
The goalless draw meant that Stellies had kept their fourth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions.
“We’re prepared and ready to take the tie back home now and hopefully get the job done to get through to the group stage,” said Barker.
The former AmaZulu mentor also revealed the need for his side to improve their conversion of chances.
“It’s always important that you don’t concede. Keeping clean sheets is key to winning football matches, but we need to continue working on converting more of the opportunities that we are creating, and in the final third, execution and decision-making,” said Barker.
“We have to be better at that, but coming away not conceding under today’s circumstances, and still being in a strong position in the tie, is very important,” added the 57-year-old.
Before turning their focus to the return leg, the side from the Winelands will have to host Manqoba Mngqithi’s in-form Golden Arrows side at Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday.
Barker insisted that his side’s immediate focus is solely on Arrows now.
“The obvious mindset and preparation turn to Wednesday’s league game, and once we’ve finished with that, we’ll start preparing for the second leg,” added Barker.
With both upcoming fixtures at home, Stellies will be aiming to build momentum and secure positive results.
