Kaizer Chiefs coach Khalil Ben Youssef provides insight into the absence of Ethan Chislett and Nkanyiso Shinga
Coach Khalil Ben Youssef has addressed the ongoing absence of Ethan Chislett and Nkanyiso Shinga from the Kaizer Chiefs lineup, attributing this to their current readiness for competitive play.
Despite their arrival at Chiefs this off-season, the duo has yet to make an appearance in matchday squads, prompting speculation regarding their fitness and preparation.
Ben Youssef stated, “With Shinga and Ethan, both of them are with us, they make all the trainings, and we as coaches know when we can take them to the team,” following the team’s 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.
He continued, “They keep working, they make very good performances in the training. But I think we’re waiting for the right moment to have them in the team.”
Both players, who joined Amakhosi from Europe—Chislett from England and Shinga from Portugal—have participated in several friendly matches during the team's preseason tour in July in the Netherlands. Notably, Shinga started in the Toyota Cup match against Asante Kotoko, while Chislett did not.
With the current season in full swing and Kaizer Chiefs having played eight games in various competitions, neither player has made their competitive debut yet. However, Ben Youssef's remarks suggest that their return to the squad might be imminent.
Looking ahead, Amakhosi will face Angolan club Kabuscorp on Saturday in the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round second leg, and both Chislett and Shinga will likely aspire to secure a spot in the matchday lineup, with hopes of possibly making their first appearance.
It's worth noting that Chiefs are seeking a comeback after suffering a 1-0 defeat in the first leg held in Angola over the weekend.
