Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Benedict Vilakazi believes that Monnapule Saleng's recent transfer to Mamelodi Sundowns is a significant win for the club, and not a setback for Orlando Pirates.
Saleng's move was officially announced as the second signing of the January transfer window on Friday. The talented winger had a productive spell on loan at newly promoted Orbit College, where he netted two goals and provided three assists in just 12 matches across all competitions.
Vilakazi, affectionately known as Tso, expressed confidence that the departure would not hurt the Pirates. In fact, he noted that Saleng’s limited playing time led the club to send him on loan, and they have already secured replacements for him.
Tso commented, “I wouldn’t say Pirates have truly lost him. Before he went on loan, he wasn’t really part of the first team, and we had already looked to bring in players to fill his role.”
He further articulated that moving to a less-pressure environment at Orbit College has been beneficial for Saleng's development.
“It was good for him to join a team with less pressure. It allowed him to develop and perhaps create opportunities for the future,” Vilakazi added.
Highlighting the strategic nature of transfers, Vilakazi mentioned that the Pirates have already adjusted their squad accordingly.
“What matters most is that he puts in the work, and his stint at Orbit seems to have paid off,” he said. “We had already moved on, replacing him with two or three players in his position.”
This insightful perspective emphasizes the ever-evolving dynamics of player transfers and their implications on both clubs involved.
