Nearly three years have passed since the shocking murder in Brakpan that has left the community and the nation grappling with questions of justice. Despite allegations tying various individuals to the case and a significant confession from whistleblower Marius van der Merwe, law enforcement has yet to make any arrests.
On the heels of his testimony as “Witness D” at the Madlanga Commission, van der Merwe tragically met an untimely end on December 5, 2025, and his assassination remains a cold case. With mounting public outrage directed at the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the South African Police Service (SAPS), the outcry for accountability and swift intervention continues to grow.
Lack of action fuels public concern
The ongoing delay in arrests has only intensified concerns among citizens. More than a month has elapsed since van der Merwe's murder, yet the police have made no progress in either the original Brakpan murder or his case. Despite the weight of the allegations, IPID and SAPS have not provided any updates or explanations regarding the investigations, further igniting frustrations over the apparent lack of accountability.
Public reacts
Social media has erupted with disappointment regarding the stalled investigation:
@jacques65645: "Because it's political. Higher-ups don't want anything, and it's not the first time dockets just get lost, and a list of everything that's happened except the justice that should have taken place."
@ditsydol460: "This is outrageously poor! IPID is useless, so is the ANC government."
@BrandonMth35323: "Some of the police are compromised & working with criminals. Maybe KZN SAPS must take over the case so that we can see results."
@subzerogunner: "Toothless, unaccountable and compromised."
@woza_diego: "KZN Police must go and operate in Joburg now to solve these crimes."
Who was Marius van der Merwe?
Marius “Vlam” van der Merwe held a respected position as a former officer with the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) and ran a successful private security firm. Gaining national recognition, van der Merwe exposed corruption during his testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where he implicated a senior official. Tragically, he was murdered in front of his family, escalating the urgency for justice.
Police assurances yet to yield arrests
Despite expressing confidence in advancing the investigation, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola announced on December 8, 2025, that a person of interest had been questioned, and three suspects had been identified. Yet to see credible action, citizens remain eagerly awaiting substantial developments in these hauntingly unresolved cases.
