Broos Celebrates South Africa's Return to the FIFA World Cup Stage

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was elated as he led South Africa to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Broos expressed his pride in his players’ resilience and spirit.

Bafana Bafana secured their World Cup spot with a solid 3–0 victory over Rwanda in a crucial qualifier held at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.

Their qualification was confirmed following Nigeria’s 4–0 win against Benin in Uyo, where a hat-trick from Victor Osimhen helped ensure South Africa finished at the top of Group C.

This marks the first time Bafana Bafana have qualified for the World Cup since 2002, and their first return to the global tournament since they hosted it in 2010.

“I have so much to say… but it was a close call,” Broos shared with SuperSport TV. “After the goalless draw against Zimbabwe on Friday, our group strengthened considerably.

“In just a matter of days, our mentality improved. From the outset of Tuesday’s match, the players displayed a strong desire to win and be without regrets. While Benin fell short, I take great pride in my players,” he added.

Broos, a former Belgium international who participated in the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, called the tournament the epitome of world football.

“The World Cup represents the ultimate stage—an unrivaled experience. Those who have been there can attest to this; every player and coach aspires to compete at this level,” he stated.

“Achieving this opportunity means we must do everything possible to realize it. It’s crucial for the players, as they will gain invaluable experience at the highest tier of global football.

“This is also a significant moment for South African football. Unlike in 2010, when they automatically qualified as hosts, this time they earned their place through merit. Following our bronze medal at the AFCON and now qualifying for the World Cup in America, the stature of South African football will undoubtedly rise, and so will the profiles of its players.”

With their qualification secured, the South African Football Association (SAFA) is poised to receive over $6 million [R110 million] from FIFA.

Mark your calendars; the FIFA World Cup draw is set for December.
