Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has openly admitted that Kaizer Chiefs have not impressed him this season, saying he “couldn’t see anything exciting” about Amakhosi’s performance in their 1-1 draw with AmaZulu in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday.
Broos was speaking on Thursday during the announcement of his squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe (10 October at Moses Mabhida Stadium) and Rwanda (14 October at Mbombela Stadium).
No Kaizer Chiefs Players in Bafana Squad
Trimming his final squad from the preliminary list, Broos did not select a single player from Kaizer Chiefs — a decision he linked directly to their poor displays.
“Maybe the people will again be angry with me, but I was yesterday [Wednesday] at Chiefs and Chiefs didn’t play a good game,” Broos told SABC Sport.
“What is the chance? So many? A shot on goal is a chance? Maybe I’m different in evaluating games, but I can’t say I saw a good game yesterday. It was against a team of AmaZulu, but okay.”
The Belgian mentor stressed that he wants to see improvement in Chiefs’ attacking play, especially in the final third, before considering their players for the national team.
Broos on the State of the PSL
Broos also commented on the competitiveness of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) this season.
“I want to see more games that have fight. For the moment you don’t see the dominance of Sundowns anymore. Last year it was like, Sundowns will be champion again. No, you can’t tell that now. Things are good, Pirates are very good, and they have a strong squad.”
Chiefs’ draw against AmaZulu left them fifth in the Betway Premiership table with 15 points after eight matches.
Bafana Bafana Under Pressure in World Cup Qualifiers
While commenting on domestic football, Broos is also facing his own challenges with Bafana Bafana.
South Africa were recently docked three points by FIFA after fielding an ineligible midfielder, Teboho Mokoena, against Lesotho in March. The ruling handed Lesotho a 3-0 win and knocked Bafana off the top of Group C in the CAF qualifiers.
With both South Africa and Benin tied on 14 points after eight matches, Bafana must secure victories against Zimbabwe and Rwanda to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
In the African qualifiers, only the group winners automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. The four best-placed runners-up will get a second chance via a play-off round.
