Broos Faces Dilemma Replacing Key Defender Mbokazi Ahead of Crucial Match

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has admitted that the absence of rising defensive star Mbekezeli Mbokazi poses a major problem for his side ahead of their all-important FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.

Broos confirmed that his technical team will assess their options to replace Mbokazi in the starting lineup, after calling up Thabo Moloisane from Stellenbosch FC as his replacement.

Mbokazi was sent off in stoppage time during Bafana Bafana’s frustrating goalless draw against Zimbabwe in their qualifier at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

The red card came after an altercation in which Mbokazi, having been pushed, retaliated — prompting Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal to show him a straight red card.

In Mbokazi’s absence, Broos will have to choose a new central defensive partner for Nkosinathi Sibisi, with Malibongwe Khoza, Moloisane, and Khulumane Ndamane all being considered — though none of them have much experience at this level in such a high-stakes fixture.

“This is a bit of a problem for us — the suspension of Mbokazi,” Broos admitted.

“You see how he plays; he’s very strong in defence and in transition when building up from the back.

“You don’t want to lose a player like that in an important game like Tuesday’s. It was a reaction from a young player who was provoked twice in five minutes. He couldn’t control himself and did something he shouldn’t have done, and he got a red card.

“We can debate whether it was a red card or not, but I don’t blame him. These are things young players must learn. I can’t say ‘well done’ — certainly not — but I won’t blame him either. We’ll now have to think carefully about how we replace him for the game against Rwanda.”

Broos, whose team must beat Rwanda by more than two goals and hope Nigeria (third in Group C with 14 points) defeat Benin (top with 17 points) to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, said he would consult his technical staff before making a final decision.

“This is not an easy decision,” he added. “We’ll look at the options and decide what’s best for the team — and hopefully, we make the right choice.”

In the African qualifiers, only group winners automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the four best second-placed teams advance to the play-off round for another shot at qualification.
