Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos Cautions Sipho Mbule on His Future
Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos, has expressed admiration for midfielder Sipho Mbule, noting his instrumental contribution in the team's victory against Rwanda during the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification match held at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.
Mbule, part of Broos' squad since his arrival in South Africa in 2021, had faded from the national team setup due to disciplinary challenges and limited playing time.
However, after transferring to Orlando Pirates in the recent off-season, Mbule has revitalized his form and caught the attention of Broos, who included him in the Bafana squad in September.
“Sipho was with us from the first day I was here, and immediately I recognized his talent, but he seemed to have interests beyond football,” Broos remarked.
“Eventually, I chose not to call him anymore. When examining Sipho’s career, he played for Mamelodi Sundowns, now he’s at Orlando Pirates, featuring for prominent teams and achieving a notable career.”
Broos mentioned he contemplated including Mbule as a replacement for Themba Zwane but had concerns regarding his commitment. After dialogue with his assistant coach, Helman Mkhalele, they resolved to provide Mbule with another opportunity.
“When searching for a substitute for Themba, we initially tried Patrick Maswanganyi, and then Sipho was discussed,” Broos explained.
“I had my reservations about Sipho’s current performance, acknowledging he had showcased potential while on loan at Sekhukhune United last season, but uncertainties lingered. Helman and I deliberated and decided to give him a chance.”
Broos conveyed a strong message to Mbule, emphasizing that this was a crucial second chance, warning him about the potential consequences of squandering it.
“From day one with us, I directly communicated with Mbule, stating, ‘This is your second chance; if you miss it, there will be no more opportunities,’” Broos stated.
“‘I am offering you an opportunity; if you don’t take it decisively, it’s finished. You won’t be part of Bafana Bafana for as long as I am in charge.”
“Considering the AFCON in December and possibly a World Cup in July next year, will you want to be there?’ He responded affirmatively, and I said, ‘Then show me!’”
Despite previously omitting Mbule from the squad over the past four years, Broos remained confident in his ability. “I never doubted his footballing skills, but observing his determination and effort is crucial. With Sipho’s talent, it’s a worthwhile experience as a coach,” he remarked.
The seasoned tactician praised Mbule’s performance, stating, “I commended him following the match, saying, ‘You seized your chance; congratulations!’”
As the AFCON tournament approaches, Mbule intends to maintain his impressive form to secure a place in the Bafana Bafana squad.
