Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos defends Evidence Makgopa’s recall
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has addressed the skepticism regarding the recall of striker Evidence Makgopa. He openly acknowledged that while Makgopa may not possess the finesse of global stars like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, his contributions to the team shouldn't be underestimated.
Makgopa steps in as a replacement for Iqraam Rayners, who had to withdraw from the squad due to medical reasons.
Following this, Rayners returned to Mamelodi Sundowns for recovery in anticipation of South Africa’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, scheduled at Moses Mabhida Stadium and Mbombela Stadium, respectively.
Makgopa has consistently been one of Broos’s trusted players, playing a significant role in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Ivory Coast, where Bafana Bafana secured a bronze medal.
His memorable moment came when he opened the scoring against a formidable Morocco in the Round of 16, before Teboho Mokoena's remarkable free kick completed the team’s victory.
This goal marks Makgopa's sole contribution to the national team thus far; however, his relentless work ethic, physicality, and defensive efforts from the front have garnered considerable acclaim.
After last featuring for South Africa in November during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, Broos reiterated his belief in Makgopa's potential: “I don’t need to elaborate on his abilities. When we participated in AFCON two years ago, many questioned his inclusion, yet his impact was clear.”
“Although he may not be Messi or Ronaldo, he has invaluable skills that benefit the team, as demonstrated in AFCON. When Iqraam left the camp, I promptly called him back because I know he can offer significant help when needed.”
This season, the Limpopo-born forward has made 11 appearances for Orlando Pirates, netting one goal and assisting three times, while he has accumulated four goals in 18 appearances for the national team.
