Bafana Bafana head coach, Hugo Broos, addresses doubts on World Cup qualification.
South Africa is set to face Zimbabwe in an important FIFA World Cup qualifying match at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban this Saturday at 18:00.
Broos emphasized the need to take each match individually, stating, “First of all, we need to take it match by match. That’s why I, as a human, you think, yeah, if Benin should lose, or play a draw in Rwanda, so you make plans, but at the end, there is one important thing, it is.”
In a recent setback, FIFA docked Bafana Bafana three points for unlawfully fielding Sundowns midfielder, Teboho Mokoena, during their qualification match against Lesotho in March. This has positioned South Africa second in Group C, tied on points with group leaders Benin, as they approach the final two fixtures of the qualifiers.
Broos shared his disappointment about the point deduction, noting, “I was a little bit, how can I say, that maybe disappointed the moment when the three points were deducted, that some people started to doubt that we could qualify.”
Inspiring his team, Broos urged players not to lose faith, stating, “I told the players also during this week, don’t start doubting or don’t think now that those opponents are twice as good as two months ago, everything stays the same.”
It is critical to note that only group winners will automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, while the four best-placed runners-up will have an opportunity through a playoff round.
