Broos Urges Mbule to Showcase Talent Ahead of AFCON Showdown

Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos Issues Challenge to Midfielder Sipho Mbule

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has put the spotlight on Sipho Mbule, urging the midfielder to demonstrate his worth for a place in the squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) in Morocco later this year.

After facing personal challenges during his time at Mamelodi Sundowns, Mbule was released at the conclusion of the last season, subsequently signing with Orlando Pirates.

Since joining the Buccaneers, Mbule has found his form, playing a crucial role in securing their historic fourth consecutive MTN8 title.

His resurgence granted him a spot back in the national team this September, appearing in Bafana Bafana’s 3-0 victory over Lesotho and the 1-1 draw against Nigeria in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Broos has named the midfielder in his roster for this month’s vital qualifiers against Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 October and Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium on 14 October.

“I told him, Sipho, this is your second chance—don’t waste it,” Broos stated during the squad announcement on SABC Sport.

“He’s a player with immense talent, but his career hasn’t mirrored that. Now he has the chance to showcase his quality again, which could significantly benefit us heading into AFCON.”

Mbule Expected to Step Up in Themba Zwane's Absence

With Themba Zwane sidelined due to injury once more, Mbule is anticipated to take on the advanced midfield position. Zwane’s absence during the September qualifiers has given Mbule the opportunity to establish himself as a long-term solution.

Broos remarked: “Let’s hope Themba returns soon, but in the meantime, Mbule has the chance to prove himself. If he maintains discipline and consistency, he can be vital for us.”

South Africa Faces Pressure in World Cup Qualifiers

The South African team enters these qualifiers facing severe pressure after being docked three points by FIFA for fielding an ineligible midfielder, Teboho Mokoena, during the match against Lesotho in March due to a suspension after receiving two yellow cards.

This penalty has dropped Bafana Bafana to second place in Group C, with Benin now on top based on goal difference. Only group winners automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada, and Mexico, while the four best second-placed teams will compete in a playoff round.

A Pivotal Moment for Mbule and Bafana Bafana

These forthcoming matches hold critical significance for Mbule, potentially shaping his future with Bafana Bafana and his inclusion in the squad for AFCON 2025. For Broos and his team, securing victories against Zimbabwe and Rwanda is essential for keeping their World Cup aspirations alive.
