Newcastle achieved their fourth victory from seven in this season’s Champions League and are on the verge of a top-eight League Phase finish.
In the Premier League, the Toon Army sits in eighth place as they gear up for a weekend matchup against Aston Villa.
The high-flying Villans have recently encountered difficulties, suffering losses to Arsenal and Everton in their last five games after a remarkable 11-game winning streak.
Their chances will be bolstered by Newcastle’s midfield star Bruno Guimaraes being sidelined. The Brazilian was substituted just before halftime while Newcastle faced PSV at St. James Park on Wednesday night.
“Yeah he's a little bit sore,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. “It's an ankle problem with a little bit of swelling.”
Guimaraes initially seemed unharmed but later required attention from Newcastle’s club physio after going down again. Although he returned to play briefly, he looked uncomfortable and was replaced before halftime.
The Brazil international shared his feelings on social media post-game, expressing ‘mixed feelings’ and hoping the injury isn’t serious.
Howe emphasized the uncertainty of Guimaraes' diagnosis: “Bruno is the type of player who never wants to come off, which makes his exit concerning for us.”
“We’ll do everything we can to get him fit as quickly as possible.”
If Guimaraes is confirmed out, it’s likely that either former Villa player Jacob Ramsey or Lewis Miley could step in to fill his spot.
