Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso expresses frustration over fan appreciation.
Amasandawana, known for their "shoe-shine and piano" style of football, have encountered criticism from fans who argue the team is losing its identity. However, the Brazilians proved their detractors wrong by qualifying for the CAF Champions League group stages in a commanding fashion, defeating Remo Stars with a remarkable 7–1 aggregate victory, including a 2–0 win in the second leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
This achievement ties Sundowns with Egyptian club Al Ahly, both reaching the group stages for the 11th time.
“It seems like every time Mamelodi Sundowns plays beautiful football, people don’t want to relate with that,” Cardoso commented. “I don’t know what is happening, but it seems that it is not the intention to just make a normal evaluation of what happens on the pitch.”
He emphasized the team's impressive performance, particularly in the first half, where they showcased speed and control, resulting in two goals. Cardoso added, “We could have scored more goals if we were a little bit more aggressive in the last third.”
Despite the dominant scoreline, he acknowledged the natural drop in intensity as the match progressed, referencing the heat and team rotations. “Some players start managing their fatigue, so they don’t expose themselves to injuries,” he noted.
With a place in the Champions League secured, Mamelodi Sundowns will now turn their focus to the Betway Premiership, as they prepare to host Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versfeld Stadium this Saturday.
