Cardoso Disappointed as Sundowns Fall to Gallants in Penalty Shootout

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso expressed disappointment but also pride in his players’ effort after they were knocked out of the Carling Knockout by Marumo Gallants in a dramatic round of 16 clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Gallants triumphed 7-6 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes, with veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi the hero — saving three spot-kicks and scoring the decisive penalty against Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams.

Cardoso: “Penalties Are a Lottery”

Speaking to SuperSport TV after the game, Cardoso admitted that his team gave everything they had but were ultimately undone by the unpredictability of the shootout.

“Gallants defended throughout the game and executed two or three counter-attacks,” said Cardoso.
“My players fought so well for 120 minutes. We controlled the game, created chances, but could not score. Penalties are a lottery — it’s about fine details, and that’s football.”

Despite dominating possession and territory, Sundowns failed to find a breakthrough as Gallants, coached by 28-year-old French tactician Alexander Lafitte, frustrated the defending Carling Knockout finalists from start to finish.

Sundowns’ Missed Chances and Red Card Blow

The Brazilians came close when Teboho Mokoena’s powerful header from a Marcelo Allende corner rattled the crossbar. New signing Miguel Reisinho was introduced in extra time to add creativity but was sent off shortly after for a dangerous tackle on Siyabonga Nhlapo.

“We played the last 15 minutes with one player less, but still managed to control the game,” added Cardoso.
“The only thing missing was the goal that would have given us the advantage.”

Gallants March Into Quarter-Finals

Gallants’ defensive resilience and Arubi’s heroics saw them advance to the Carling Knockout quarter-finals, joining Orlando Pirates, Durban City, Golden Arrows, and TS Galaxy in the next round.
