Cardoso Eyes Victory Against MC Alger Ahead of AFCON Pause

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is keenly aware of the significance of their upcoming CAF Champions League match against MC Alger, knowing that a strong performance would set his team up well ahead of the international break for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Brazilians are set to face MC Alger on Friday evening at Alila Pointe Stadium in Algeria in the second group-stage match of the tournament.

Cardoso expressed his respect for MC Alger, highlighting the club’s rich history and development over the years.

“It’s nice to find this club, and of course, I know MC Alger very well by their history,” Cardoso said.

“I think this is a club that has developed, and also knowing that we are facing one of the biggest clubs in Africa.”

This match marks a significant encounter for Sundowns, who are looking to build on their winning start to the group stage after defeating Lupopo in their opening match last weekend.

With the AFCON break looming, Cardoso emphasized the importance of securing a positive result in this match.

“It’s important for us to play well and be in a better position as we’re going into the international break as AFCON is coming,” he added.

“I think that’s what we’re going to try in this game, to get a good match and also try to get good results that we are looking for ahead of the international break.”

This match will be the first time Sundowns face Rulani Mokwena since he left Sundowns in 2024 to take the helm at Wydad Casablanca and now at MC Alger.

However, the coach remains on the task at hand rather than any personal dynamics.

Sundowns will aim to continue their winning momentum, while MC Alger will be desperate to get back on track after losing to Al Hilal in their opening match.

With the international break approaching, both teams know that a strong performance in this match would be crucial in setting themselves up for the challenges ahead.

The stakes are high as both teams look to make the most of this encounter before the players depart for AFCON, which will be held in Morocco later in December and conclude in January next year.
