Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is hopeful that his captain, Themba Zwane, has not suffered a serious injury after the midfielder left the field in their 3-0 Betway Premiership win over Magesi FC.
The match, held at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday, saw goals from Kutlwano Letlhaku and a brace from Iqraam Rayners, propelling Sundowns to the top of the league table.
Zwane, who was subbed on in the 64th minute for Tashreeq Matthews, appeared to jar a muscle while being marked. This was his first appearance since an injury sustained during the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final against Orlando Pirates last month.
“Well, let’s see what’s happening,” Cardoso said on SuperSport TV after the game.
“As I understood from the doctor, it’s not the same thing that he had before. Let’s hope it is nothing serious. Let’s hope.”
The victory over Magesi was the only league game played over the weekend, a space reserved for the MTN8 final which Orlando Pirates won on Saturday.
The win allowed Sundowns to move to 14 points after six matches, putting them one point ahead of Sekhukhune United and Kaizer Chiefs, who are set to face off on Tuesday.
Cardoso expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s first-half performance. “It was clear that we were not satisfied, especially the players in the front,” he stated.
He added that his half-time message was “a little bit strong” to motivate the team.
Sundowns will now shift their focus to their upcoming match against Marumo Gallants at Dr. Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.
