Mamelodi Sundowns Coach Miguel Cardoso Highlights Importance of a Good Start
In preparation for their CAF Champions League group stage opener against Saint-Eloi Lupopo, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso emphasized the necessity of respect for opponents and the significance of a strong start at Loftus Versfeld Stadium this Saturday afternoon.
Cardoso articulated that his squad recognizes the imperative of respecting all teams, especially those from less-fancied nations, fostering this mindset throughout their week of training.
“We understand that sometimes because a team is from a (less fancied) country or has no such curriculum, there’s sometimes a wrong idea about taking the respect that we should have in this kind of match,” Cardoso noted.
His remarks follow Lupopo's commendable performance against Orlando Pirates, which secured them a position in this year's Champions League group stage.
Reflecting on past experiences, Cardoso recalled Sundowns' struggles last season when they commenced their group stage against Maniema Union, resulting in a frustrating home draw under former coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
“We remember very well what happened last year on the first game of the group stage where Mamelodi Sundowns was not able to beat Maniema at home, and from there, all that haunted the team a little bit throughout the group stage,” he remarked.
“Therefore, we are keen to make a good start. A good start is crucial; as soon as the referee blows the whistle, the players set to start that match will be determined and focused on achieving the desired result.”
A victory by two or more goals against Lupopo would position Sundowns favorably in the group standings, currently led by Al Hilal with three points and a plus-one goal difference after their win against MC Alger.
