More than a decade since its last installment, the Carmageddon franchise makes a triumphant return with Carmageddon: Rogue Shift. Developed by the talented team at Redout studio 34BigThings, this latest addition places players behind the wheel of a faceless driver navigating a dystopian world ravaged by war, disasters, and an unpredictable zombie apocalypse unleashed by megacorporations.
In this universe, zombies, referred to as the Wasted, overwhelm survivors while players engage in deadly races for dominance, glory, and the chance to escape the chaos through a rocket launch. This entry revitalizes the series, but with a twist: Rogue Shift embraces a roguelite format. Players will drift through procedurally generated courses and participate in events to earn upgrade credits. Even if you meet an unfortunate end, permanent upgrades gained through beatcoins will enhance your future attempts.
Every journey demands strategic navigation, with vehicles requiring repairs along the way. The challenge escalates dynamically, so finding optimal combinations of vehicles, perks, and weaponry is crucial to crafting the ultimate machine capable of combating the Wasted hordes or rival drivers.
According to 34BigThings, players can choose from 13 weapon categories and over 80 perks, while each of the 15 unlockable vehicles features distinct handling traits based on their drivetrain, weight, center of mass, suspensions, tire friction, and pressure.
Head of design Giuseppe Enrico Franchi mentioned, "We designed Carmageddon: Rogue Shift to challenge players in a way that encourages repeat plays. Our aim is to immerse players in the exhilarating flow state reminiscent of the original Carmageddon titles and, indeed, the combat racing genre as a whole," in a recent blog post.
Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is set for release in early 2026 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.
