The world’s first openly gay top-flight footballer, Josh Cavallo, has revealed that he faced ‘internal homophobia’ at A-League team Adelaide United, which ultimately led to his departure from the club.
Since publicly announcing his sexuality in October 2021, Cavallo has received immense support from notable figures in the footballing world, including Gary Lineker and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He became the first high-profile footballer to come out since Justin Fashanu did in 1990, who unfortunately faced severe backlash after his announcement. Cavallo claims he, too, has faced discrimination following his own revelation.
Cavallo: A Trailblazer for Change
Following Cavallo's courageous move, fellow footballers such as 17-year-old Blackpool player Jake Daniels and Czech international Jakub Jankto have also come out, marking significant progress in the sport. In an emotional Instagram post, Cavallo expressed the reasons behind his exit from Adelaide United, stating that it was not due to his football performance, but rather the attitudes of those in power regarding his sexual orientation.
“It’s hard to swallow when I realised my own club was homophobic. I was angry because people thought I was sidelined based on injuries, when in reality, it was internal homophobia that kept me on the bench,” he said.
Despite facing prejudice, Cavallo maintained professionalism and dedicated himself to training, expressing pride over his efforts. His emotional journey included questioning whether he should have kept his sexuality private, especially after experiencing negative reactions from teammates.
Currently, the former Australia youth international has transitioned to Peterborough Sports and is now playing at Stamford, a club in the seventh tier of English football. He shared his optimism about starting anew in the UK, stating, “This fresh start in the UK has helped me breathe again and I hope I can fall back in love with the sport that means everything to me.”
In conclusion, despite the challenges faced at Adelaide, Cavallo remains grateful for the city where he honed his skills and found the courage to live authentically.
