The South African football community is united in mourning the loss of Lucas Tlhomelang, a beloved defender for the Orlando Pirates and Mpumalanga Black Aces, who passed away on January 4, 2025, at the age of 49. Known for his on-field prowess and off-field kindness, Tlhomelang leaves behind a rich legacy as both a player and a person.
Born in Vryburg and raised in Taung, Tlhomelang earned the nickname “Lookaround” from renowned coach Jomo Sono, which reflected his instinctive ability to read the game. His career was not only marked by his skills on the pitch, but also by his generous spirit.
A Loving Tribute to a Football Icon
In a heartfelt tribute shared with SABC Sport, Tlhomelang's wife, Boikhutso Moilwa, celebrated her husband's remarkable character, emphasizing his resilience and selflessness. Despite a long battle with a brain tumor, he devoted himself to uplifting those around him.
“One thing I admired most about him was his willingness to give without expecting anything in return,” Moilwa shared.
“Even during the pain and hospital treatments, he found ways to make those around him feel loved and supported. That is how I will always remember him.”
Legacy and Memorable Moments
Tlhomelang’s football journey included stints with clubs like Orlando Pirates, Mpumalanga Black Aces, and Bloemfontein Celtic, also marking his presence in the national team with three caps for Bafana Bafana. He is survived by his wife and two sons, with a memorial service held on January 8 and the funeral set for January 10 at the Pudumoe Community Hall in the North West.
Moilwa reflected on the enduring impact of her husband:
“Lucas’s remarkable presence continues to touch my life. Losing him reminds me that nothing is permanent, but his love and memories will remain with me forever.”
Former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi lamented the loss, expressing his sorrow and reminiscing about their bond:
“This is very sad and so heartbreaking. This is what they mean when they say life is too short. I used to call him mfana wako Taung [a boy from Taung],” Lekgwathi noted.
The tragic passing of Tlhomelang adds to a series of losses recently felt in South African football, with the community also grieving the untimely deaths of other players, highlighting the fleeting nature of life.
