Kaizer Chiefs Begin CAF Confederation Cup Campaign with Disappointing 1-0 Loss
The match got off to a lively start, with Chiefs creating numerous chances in the first 15 minutes. Glody Lilepo had a promising opportunity in the 11th minute, but his shot flew wide of the post.
Despite their strong start, the visitors were unable to capitalize on their chances, and the score remained 0-0 at halftime.
Kabuscorp’s efforts were also notable, with the home side nearly scoring just before halftime, only to be denied by a spectacular save from Chiefs’ goalkeeper Brandon Peterson.
The second half began promisingly for Chiefs, but Kabuscorp’s Julio Matondo broke the deadlock with a well-taken header in the 60th minute, rising above Adem McCarthy to beat Brandon Petersen.
In response, Chiefs made two substitutions, introducing Wandile Duba and Gaston Sirino to bolster their attack. However, despite their efforts, they were unable to find the equalizer.
Kabuscorp nearly doubled their lead in the 70th minute, but their chance was squandered.
The visitors protested for a penalty in the 75th minute after Lilepo was fouled in the box, but the referee did not award anything. Immediately after, Duba was fouled in the box, and again, the referee did not give a penalty.
Chiefs introduced youngster Mfundo Vilakazi in search of an equalizer, but it was too little, too late.
The two teams will now face each other again next Saturday at FNB Stadium, with the winner advancing to the second preliminary round on aggregate score or penalties.
